Folded Theater
In late 2023, during a 20-day residency in Chengjiang at Fuxian Lake, Yunnan, this project used Fuxian Lake and its surrounding area as subjects for a multi-medium reflection on nature and life forms across various temporal and spatial scales. Focusing on the history, geography, and cultural traces of Fuxian Lake and its surroundings, it anchors the presence of humanity as a point of reference to explore cross-scale existences in geography and time, seeking intersections and boundary lines between different modes of being, reconnecting the macro and micro dimensions of experience. The project calmly traces ancient relics, uncovering multi-perspective narratives, depictions, and knowledge systems that create a tangible landscape. Through regenerating images, videos, and audio, it aims to focus on and restore the time-space awareness and sensory experiences concealed by modernity, allowing one to explore the interstitial transitions within folds of time and space through the overflow of these experiences.
A series of audio recordings, photographs, and hand-drawings evokes the concept of a “human theater” through local historical legends. While seemingly vibrant and surreal, these narratives delve into the complex, conflicted social spectacle that humanity has wrestled with throughout its evolutionary development. By using elements such as the lake, mountains, history, and characters as metaphors, the project scans social transformation in historical contexts through a “sound + map” approach from a human-centered perspective, thereby reflecting the complex, polyphonic social ecology within the folds of experience.
